Several pine stumps in a cleared lot

When there is more than one stump

A single stump job is mostly setup: loading the grinder, driving out, unloading and cleaning up. Once the machine is on site, each extra stump costs much less. That is why cost guides price additional stumps at a fraction of the first.

Multi-stump jobs come up when a row of pines has come down along a property line, after storm cleanup, when an owner clears an overgrown back lot, or on a new-build lot left with stumps from clearing.

Pine stumps on new-build lots

Loblolly pine grows fast and is common across the Triangle, and NRCS soil descriptions list loblolly and shortleaf pines, oaks, hickories and gums as the wooded cover on Triassic-basin soils. When a wooded lot is cleared for a house, pines are often cut and the stumps left behind.

The newest housing near Durham is in the fast-growing towns. In ACS 2024 5-year figures, 45.5% of Apex homes and 36.8% of Morrisville homes were built in 2010 or later, and fewer than 4% of homes in either town were built before 1980. Hillsborough (40.2% built since 2010) and Mebane (38.0%) are close behind, and Durham ZIP 27703 is at 38.6%. Newer neighborhoods often have leftover stumps along wooded edges, and pine is usually quicker to grind than oak.

How multiple stumps are priced

Cost guides describe two common methods. Some companies charge a flat price per stump with a discount after the first. Others charge by the inch of diameter. Many apply a minimum to the first stump and a lower rate to each one after.

ItemTypical range
One average stump, Durham areaabout $150–$450 (Durham average about $327)
Per inch of diameter$2–$5 per inch
Minimum chargeabout $100
Each additional stumpabout $40–$70
Small stump (≤10 in)$40–$75
Medium stump (10–30 in)$75–$150
Large stump (>30 in)$200–$420
Chip haul-away$2–$3 per inch, or about $80–$125

Typical ranges from published cost guides (2025–2026) — estimates, not quotes. Your quote comes from the company you choose. See the full Durham stump grinding cost guide and calculator.

Hardwoods such as oak can add about $50–$150 per stump. Try the calculator on the stump grinding cost page for a rough total with your number of stumps.

Access, ground and chip volume

  • Gate width and path: measure the narrowest point between the trailer and the stumps.
  • Slope and soft ground: wet red clay can rut under a tracked machine. Ask how the company protects the lawn.
  • Spacing: stumps close together are faster; scattered stumps mean more moving and setup.
  • Chips: several stumps produce a big pile. Decide whether to keep some as mulch or have it hauled. See cleanup and backfill.
  • Roots: on a cleared lot, ridges of roots can be ground at an hourly rate. See root grinding.

Lot rules: development, buffers and 811

Durham’s Unified Development Ordinance ties tree protection and coverage to development, and requires an existing tree to be kept or a new one planted before a new single-family home gets its certificate of compliance. If your lot is under construction or has a required buffer, check with Durham City-County Planning before clearing. For an existing home lot, no permit requirement was found for grinding stumps. In Cary and Morrisville, state enabling law (S.L. 2000-108) excludes property being developed for single-family or duplex homes from the towns’ tree ordinances. Elsewhere, check with the town. This is general information, not legal advice.

NC’s 811 law (G.S. 87-122) requires notice three full working days before digging; a ticket is valid 28 days. There is no minimum depth exemption, and mechanized grinding appears to fit the statute’s definition of excavation. The homeowner exemption (G.S. 87-124) covers only an owner digging on their own single-family lot, not a contractor for hire, so ask the company to confirm it will request a locate. 811 marks public lines only; flag private irrigation, lighting and pet-fence wires. This is general information, not legal advice.

Hiring checklist for multi-stump jobs

Whichever company you choose, check these before work starts:

  • Liability insurance: ask for a certificate of general liability insurance in the company’s name.
  • Workers’ comp: required in NC for businesses with three or more employees; check with the NC Industrial Commission’s coverage search.
  • A written quote stating grinding depth, surface roots, chip cleanup or haul-away, and backfill.
  • NC 811: ask who requests the locate and for the ticket number.
  • Private lines: mark irrigation, invisible fence and landscape lighting yourself.
  • Access: share gate width, slope and the distance from where a trailer can park.
  • Stump list: ask for each stump’s diameter and price, or the pricing rule, on the quote, so you can compare companies line by line.

Stump Grinding Durham does not grind stumps or remove trees; the independent company you choose quotes, schedules and does the work directly with you.

Grinding yourself?

With many small pine stumps, some owners consider a rental grinder at about $180–$365 per day. Read renting a stump grinder vs. hiring a pro first, and see how long a stump takes to rot if you’re thinking of leaving them.

Multiple stump grinding FAQ

How much does it cost to grind several stumps?

Published cost guides show the first stump priced at the full rate, often with a minimum around $100, and each additional stump at about $40–$70, or by diameter at $2–$5 per inch, whichever is larger. These are typical ranges, not quotes. Large stumps, hardwoods, roots and chip haul-away add to the total.

Are pine stumps cheaper to grind than oak?

Often, yes. Pine is a softwood, and cost guides list a hardwood surcharge of about $50–$150 per stump for oaks and other dense woods. Diameter still matters most. A lot cleared of loblolly pine can have many stumps close together, which makes the per-stump price lower than for scattered single stumps.

Do I need a permit to clear stumps on a lot in Durham?

Durham’s tree rules are tied to development, such as new construction and mass grading, and new single-family homes need a retained or planted lot tree. Grinding on an existing home lot had no permit requirement found. If the lot is being developed, check with Durham City-County Planning. This is general information, not legal advice.

What happens to the chips from many stumps?

Several stumps make a large pile of chips and soil. You can keep some as mulch once aged, away from the house, or have them hauled off for about $2–$3 per inch of diameter. Several Triangle towns won’t collect debris cut by a contractor, so make haul-away part of the written quote.

Will a grinder fit through my gate?

Compact grinders are made for backyards, but width varies by machine. Measure your narrowest gate and note slopes, steps, soft ground and the distance from the driveway. Send these with your request so each company can bring the right machine and price the access honestly.
